In honor of the 250th birthdays of both the United States (July 4th 2026) and San Francisco (June 29th 2026) this multimedia exhibit celebrates 250 trans and gender non-conforming individuals with connections to San Francisco. This exhibit, based on the Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer's book on San Francisco's Transgender District and includes historic images from the 1800's through the present.
Due to changing language, laws and privileges the word trans is used expansively to celebrate gender non-conforming lives, identities, art and experience. The images and articles below are meant to inspire additional research, support activism and policy change. This collection is also a celebration of the trans aesthetic and the strength trans and gender non-conforming community have used to navigate changing cultures and laws.
Discriminatory news articles are featured throughout this exhibit to help contemporary communities understand the tides of transmisia the community has had to navigate through the centuries. Trans visibility celebrates complicated histories by paving healthier paths forward. In other words, this collection is lifesaving storytelling for times like these.
